Thread: what is tick data?

  1. #1
    Hi everyone,
I am a lil bit confused and consequently asking this. I mean is a tick chart (25 ticks)different from a time frame chart(25 minutes)? How can be a tick calculated and is a tick chart plotted? I searched a lot but couldn't discover any source which clearly informs the difference between these. . .or the calculation. Anybody here that can help me?

    regards

Well each tick represents and actual trade. Not necessarily always a 1 pip motion from trade to trade. And yes, I would agree that small bars on a tick chart (based on the tick placing ) would suggest that a narrow range or consolidation.

    Hope that helps.

I would also like to ad which Tick Charts are only used on an Intra-day basis. They're popular for very short term trading. Many inventory index daytraders/scalpers utilize tick charts.

Actually pretty simple. With a Tick chart, a bar is made each so-many price ticks occur instead of a pub being made in time lapse, such as 5 minutes. 15 min. etc..

Instance: using a 144 tick chart setting a new bar would be made every time 144 ticks occur. Not all charting software has the Tick Setting option.
