Thread: MT4 and Computer Performance

Maybe someone will help me to sort out what my issue might be with the operation of MT4 on my new trading pc. My computer is just a couple of months old. It is a custom built quad core, 4 gig ram, windows xp pro 64, multiple video cards, etc.. It is devoted to nothing else and trading. So what happens is that I load up in the morning and everything is doing normally. My desktop will consist of EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY every with 5M,15M, and daily timeframes. So then maybe a couple of hours later when I attempt to scale the charts, or work with any drop down menus it seems to take forever. What's in motion. So I shut down the program and restart it and everything is fine for awhile until the exact same thing happens. Now the crazy thing is I've MT4 on a ratty old celeron HP Notebook and it never seems to happen on that computer. In reality I leave this computer on all of the time together with the MT4 running and also the operation never appears to deteriorate. I've checked my system processes and can observe that MT4 will spike the cpu load to 25% very often which appears quite large to me. I'm sure hoping that someone has some thoughts on this cause it's me baffled. Any assistance will be greatly valued.

You didnt state the ghz. But may be the. Consider hiding symbols that you dont need. Prob something slowing it look in task manager for additional running appliions. - next attempt uninstall/reinstall

    try the simple things first.

Could be a badly composed indior or two too. These can cause a major draw on computer tools.

    Hi YM

with a machine spec like yours that should really not be happening. Fruing I will wager.

Are you comfortable with using Task Mangager.

After boot up . . Click explorer process and End Process Tree... then launch new appliion in Task Manager... may be useful to set a shortcut to your MT install to the desktop first... then browse to this instead of through your cfile structure... and start MT4 as the only non-technical program working on the PC. You can simply click on the terminal process and put its priority greater too, but this wont identifiion the issue.

Do you've got habit indys running in your mt windows?? . If so gradually add them and assess functionality to machines.

Since I said your machine spec should be flying through MT.... if you aren't conducting any bespoke indies you should have the ability to conduct many... many... many price charts with standard indies without any troubles at all.

Is the broadband fine... presumably if your laptops ok.

Let us know how your getting on mate.... I'm for you I really do...

Are you using history files? This can consume the CPU resources to a massive amount. If you use full history for backtesting, you should book an example of MT4 just for testing purposes (copy the whole folder and use that one for your evaluations, with maximum bars in chart and history) as well as the normal one for daily trading, with a far smaller setting for maximum bars (Menu Tools - Options - Charts).

Otherwise, consider reducing those numbers anyhow (normal is 512000 bars in background and 60000 bars in chart, you are able to try a lower number and see if this improves your computer's functionality ).

I just wanted to bump this as I am having real issues with MT4 performance. I am using custom indiors but checking with others using similar they do not seem to have same troubles. I have Win 7 Core i7-2600 [email protected] and 8GB RAM. I have just tried educing number of bars in charts and background down to 5000. It has had some progress but its slow. I am missing trades for this. Anyone got any bright ideas?

I found this elsewhere that has helped a little I think

My MT4 platform was'sputtering' all the time, small freezes for a few seconds at a time (with hourglass mouse) that I would only have to wait out. I just had 8 charts open along with a few straightforward indiors on each chart. I did a little research this weekend and gather a list of some things that helped streamline Windows (XP) for me personally. Don't hesitate to add to the list when you've got an excellent tip. Hope this helps.

Before I put into it the Windows tweaks allow me to say There Are a few things you can do inside MT4 as well, especially:

    - restricting the Amount of bars/chart (see Tools/Options/Charts)
    - restricting the Amount of overall bars (same)
-CTRL-M to bring up Market Watch, right-click, pick'Hide All' (my broker claims this is very important for saving bandwidth)
-Assess your'Pros' tab from the Terminal and look for Any Sort of'errors'

    Credit to Djarum11 for this

Obvious bulge, but where would be the nerds and geeks once you truly need one. Just kidding!

I'm still trying to figure this issue out. I noticed the MT4 files are in the (x86) Program Folder on the pc. Could this issue and be?
