View Full Version : How long did it take you to stop losing money?
Hi everyone, I'm relatively new to this. I've been in demo for a few months and a few weeks in real, and the truth is I'm still losing money. I'd like to know if this is normal, how long it took you to stop losing, and if there's any stage where "suddenly" everything starts to make sense.

It is not to discourage you, but it takes three years and it still happens to me. The moment when everything makes sense is not magical, it comes after many documented and analyzed errors.

It took me about a year. Not to win, but at least to stop losing. What helped me the most was to stop operating so much and focus only on a couple of setups that I understood well.
Losing is part of the game, if you're not prepared for that, you'd better stick to playing chess. This is a business, not a casino.

It took me about 9 months. What made the difference was to start running a trading journal and stop improvising. It sounds basic, but nobody does.
I keep waiting for that moment when everything makes sense. At the moment all I understand is that my account is thinner every month.

Don't get obsessed with time. Obsess yourself with processes. The one who measures your success in weeks ends up frustrated. The one who measures your consistency eventually wins.

Im new too and Im glad Im not the only one who feels this is harder than they sell. Thanks for opening this thread, Im already feeling less lonely.
Honestly, until I stopped operating and put daily risk limits, I saw no change. It may take a year or three, but without discipline there is no miracle.

This isn't about stopping losing, it's about losing little when you're wrong and winning a lot when you're right.

My learning curve was about 18 months. The first step was to accept that the market owed me nothing and that operating well didnt always mean making money.

I dont know about you, but I started getting better when I stopped reading forums and started studying on my own. A lot of info around here is more noise than it helps.

Dude, if you expect this to be like on YouTube videos, you're already fried. Most of us learn the punches, and that takes time and money.
I'm just starting, but seeing this thread I'm already getting ready not to throw in the towel at three months. Thank you all for sharing.
It took me more than two years and I'm not ashamed to say it. I'm profitable now, but I had to unlearn a lot of nonsense before I did it. Patience, constancy and humility.
After reading everything they have shared, I would like to contribute something that might help put into perspective the process of going from loser to consistent. There is a very installed myth that being profitable is just a matter of finding the right strategy. Nothing further from reality. The strategy, by itself, will not save you? The real difference makes your ability to apply that strategy under pressure, with discipline, and respecting your system even when it is in drawdown. Many new traders get frustrated because they seek a magic formula. And when one strategy doesnt give them immediate results, they discard it and test another. This endless search cycle keeps them trapped at the same point for years. What they dont understand is that almost any strategy with logic behind it can work, if you manage the risk well, they have patience and it executes itself in a disciplined way. Another common error is to focus on the individual outcome of each operation, its more than you lose the mind of the trader. Trading is a game of odds, and you need to think in terms of series, not of isolated deals. A losing operation is not a failure, its part of the game. But if yous its the problem, its every time, its its its not the plans its its its a lot yous its its its yous yous yous yous its its its its yous its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its its

Don't you think minimizing the importance of strategy can be dangerous for those who just started?
Very good approach. Thinking about series of operations completely changed my chip.

I've never seen so clearly explained why changing strategy all the time is so destructive.
Thank you for this piece of response. It helped me understand that I must stop obsessing about the immediate result.

But if any strategy can work, why do so many fail in backtest or real?

Great contribution. I'm left with that "think about series and not individual trades." I clicked.

Thanks, I needed to read something like that.
And how do you keep disciplined when everything goes wrong for days?
The truth is, very good content, you can tell that you speak from experience.
Thank you, you motivated me to resume my cold-headed trading plan.

This sounds good, but it's very idealistic. Most people don't have that mental temper, what do you suggest to build it?
Don't you think psychology overvalues a little bit? If the system is bad, it doesn't matter how strong you are emotionally.
I don't know... to say that almost any strategy works if it's applied with discipline seems to me to be a dangerous simplification.
A great contribution. We really needed to read something like this in this forum.

Inspiring and direct. Sometimes we need to read things like that to get back on track.
And what do you do when the drawdown isn't psychological but because of changed market conditions?

I like your approach, but wouldn't it be better to adapt the strategy to the context instead of insisting on one?
