View Full Version : Is it worth doing manual backtesting or is it wasting time?

Hi everyone, I'm starting with trading and I see that many recommend manual backtesting, but honestly it seems very slow, tedious and I don't know if it's really worth it. Is it really helpful to do it by hand or is there some more efficient way to validate a strategy without spending hours and hours checking old candles? I appreciate advice from those who have already gone through this.

If you don't have the patience to do backtesting, then trading isn't for you.

Look, I understand it sounds boring, but when you do it right you realize how your strategy reacts in different contexts. Its not just seeing if you win or lose, but how you behave too.

I did it for 3 weeks in a row at EURUSD and opened my eyes. I realized that 80% of my tickets were garbage. Better to spend time on that than to lose real money without knowing why.

Or you use an EA and smart... why waste time with that if there is technology? The one who does everything by hand today is masochistic.

It depends on your approach. If your system is discretionary, manual backtesting is essential. But if you use something 100% mechanical, with a good EA it reaches you. Yes, it is robust, not any bot out there.

It helped me more than any course. Backtesting gave me confidence to operate in real. Its not wasting time if you know what youre looking for.

Trust? He gave me paranoia. I saw setups everywhere and when I passed to real, nothing went the same. Not everything that serves in the past serves in the present.

The problem is that most people want shortcuts. If you dont understand your system inside, how do you expect to operate it consistently?

I recommend doing it with software like Forex Tester or using the visual mode in MT4. It saves you time, you can simulate years in hours and still maintain manual focus.

They're selling you smoke. The market changes all the time. What worked in 2020 has nothing to do with today. Better to learn how to adapt than to memorize past results.

What happens is that people don't know how to interpret the data they get from backtest. It's not just "I won 300 pips," it's analyzing drawdown, frequency, duration, failure patterns. That's what nobody does and that's why they hate it.
It's not for everyone, that's clear, but if you take trading seriously, backing is like training for an athlete.

I started doing it out of obligation and I ended up enjoying it. You find the taste when you begin to see that your hypotheses have logic. Thats when you feel that you control something.

Conclusion: if you want results without effort, look for something else. This is trading, not magic. Backtesting brings you down and connects you to reality. No one wants to do it, but everyone needs it.

The manual backtesting is one of the fundamental pillars to develop a robust strategy and, more importantly, to know thoroughly how it behaves under different market conditions. Despite how tedious it may seem, to do it yourself without automation forces you to spend time with graphics, identify patterns, filter fake entries and above all, understand the logic behind your system. Many want quick results and jump this process, but that's where inconsistency is born. By manually facing each past operation, you start to recognize qualitative aspects that no automatic backtest can offer you: the uncertainty in grey areas of the market, the cheating of the false breaks, or the way the structure changes just when everything seems perfect. It's a mental training. It's not only you learn the system; you learn to operate with it, with its strengths and weaknesses. And the most interesting thing: learn about yourself. Plus, doing manual backtesting improves your ability to make decisions in real time. When you see repeatedly how certain scenarios develop, you develop a visual memory and a market intuition that allows you to operate with more smoothness. But what makes you operate in real is where you learn, but without the manual backing.
Thank you for this explanation, so you do feel like working on the graphics.
But all that sounds really good in theory, does it really work if the market changes so much?

But if the market doesn't exactly repeat itself, don't you think backtesting can give a false sense of security?
Excellent reflection. I loved the approach of deeply analyzing less operations.

Thank you so much, just what I needed to get out of the block I'm in with my strategy.
Two things: how exactly do you define a valid scenario? And second, do you use a trading journal during the backtest?

Your approach is fine, but... isnt that visual memory or market input too subjective? How do you measure it?
Excellent, really, you motivated me to review my whole approach, a hug.

Very good, but I still doubt: if you do a backtest and then you adjust the rules, aren't you curved fitting the system?

Thank you very much. Very clear, useful and straight to the point.
Thank you for the contribution. Very complete and well explained.
Don't take this the wrong way, but isn't it that many backtests work on past data and don't work for the future?
