View Full Version : How much capital do I really need to live on trading?

Hi everyone, Im new to this and Ive been reading all I can about forex, actions and futures for a few weeks. A doubt that doesnt take my sleep away but keeps my feet on the ground is: how much capital does it really take to live on trading? I dont want answers like depends or its relative. Im looking for numbers, real experiences, margins of error, whatever... but data.

I'm telling you clearly and bluntly: minimum $100,000 if you want to live without leverage like a madman, and that's if you're good.

It depends on your lifestyle. Living in Thailand or Switzerland? There is a big difference. But overall, with $50,000 and 3-4% monthly consistent you can already think about quitting the job.

Do you really think this is a money-making machine? You have to have cold blood and years of experience! Its not just how much capital, its how much you can keep without breaking emotionally.

I started with $20,000 a year ago. I dont live out of this yet, but I already cover some monthly expenses. And yes, its more psychological than mathematical.

Thank you for the answers, although some hurt. Its clear to me that having a magic figure is unrealistic, but also that throwing away with $1,000 waiting to pay the rent is pure smoke.

No one's gonna tell you, but many here don't make any money, they're gonna paint castles and they haven't even made a real retreat.

Good point. I've been using a demo account for 6 months and every time I think I'm ready, the market teaches me humility.

To live on trading you need more than capital: discipline, emotional control and a system with statistical advantage. Without that, even if you have $1 million, you lose it the same way.

I mean, no courses, no selling signals, just with your operations.

Yeah, me, but it took me seven years to get to that point, and it wasn't with forex, but with futures and surgical risk management.

It seems to me that the "live of trading" is overrated. What's wrong with keeping it as an extra income? Not everyone has to leave their job to prove anything.

The idea of a trader who lives on the beach is sometimes very romantic. It is not as easy or as glamorous as they paint it.

10-04-2025 15:16,
Well, at least I get clear and low ego. Im going to focus on improving my system, continuing to study and, who knows, maybe in a few years Ill have the answer from my own experience.

This is a marathon, not a 100-meter race, as long as you don't get out of the way, you're doing fine.

To talk about living trading is to touch on a topic that mixes finance, psychology and brutal realism. First of all, the essential thing is to understand that the necessary capital depends not only on how much you need to cover your expenses, but on the consistency of your system and your ability to handle drawdowns without breaking emotionally or financially. Its not about doing a winning operation per month, but about maintaining a steady growth curve, with reasonable margins and risk management that can withstand negative streaks. Secondly, lets give a realistic example: if you need $2,000 a month to live, thats $24,000 a year. If your system is able to generate a 3% monthly sustained (which is already quite demanding)

But if so many profitable traders say they make 10% a month, why don't you believe them?

Dont you think saying that 3% per month is quite demanding discourages more than it helps? There are traders who do much more.

And how is an average person supposed to gather $100k just to start thinking about trading? I find it unaffordable for most.

But aren't you also falling to the opposite end? There are people who do manage to live with less capital, right?

Don't you think such a conservative approach can paralyze those who want to start with little?
