I've been observing a disturbing pattern with my broker (I'm not going to say which one... yet

Yeah, that's classic of a lot of market makers. They upload the spread because they know there's aggressive liquidity and they want to protect themselves or just cut it out. Look for a real ECN broker, not those who claim to be and aren't.

The same thing happens to me with ICMarkets. In strong news, the spread opens as if it were an exotic pair. I dont understand how they keep saying they are ECN. Where is the transparency?

It is not manipulation, it is the market. If there is no liquidity, the spread expands. What do you expect, to give you perfect conditions in the midst of war of orders?

Totally according to the creator. If the broker does not warn or limit those spread movements, it is manipulation by omission. One thing is volatility, another is abuse.

Change broker, simple. There are options that block the maximum spread during news or at least inform you on the instrument tab. You don't have to endure scams.

And has anyone tried how Darwinex behaves during high-impact events? Im considering migrating there but I dont want to fall into the same with another face.

I use Pepperstone and while the spread goes up, it doesn't get to such absurd levels. It's usually 4-7 pips in EURUSD during NFP, which is understandable. But 30 pips... that's theft.

Are you operating with stop loss of 5 pips in news? If so, the problem is not spread, its you. Learn to operate events, dont blame them for your lack of strategy.

Hahaja, the broker's advocate has already appeared. How much do you get paid to justify being keyed by 30 pips spreads? The data is clear, not a matter of strategy.

What we need to check is whether the spread floats because of market conditions or because the broker uses that as an excuse to get you out of the game, and believe me, many do it on purpose.

It happened to me with FBS. Normal spread of 0.8 in EURUSD... and when an interest rate news came out, boom! spread 36 pips for 10 seconds. Obviously they jumped my SL. Never again.

Does anyone use RAW brokers? They say they dont put their hand in but I keep seeing absurd spread extensions. I want to know if thats normal or just marketing.

Thanks for the answers, it helps me to see that I am not the only one. I will record my sessions with OBS during events to expose these practices. We must unmask the "wolves with lambskin"!

One of the best ways to detect if your broker really offers you ECN execution and not a market maker faade is to observe its behavior during high impact economic news. Although many new traders focus on the average spread, what really reveals is the behavior of the spread in the first 10-30 seconds after the publication of data such as the NFP, CPI or interest rate decisions. If the spread is multiplied by 10 without clear technical justification, you are probably faced with an entity that artificially manipulates the conditions to protect itself or benefit from your orders. It is necessary to understand that, in a purely ECN environment, the spreads are not fixed by the broker, but by the direct supply and demand among market participants. If there may be temporary spread expansions due to lack of liquidity or natural slippage, these are usually short and not excessive. When you see the spread in a liquid pair as EUR/USD rises from 0.2 to 15-20 pips for more than 3-5 seconds, you are looking at the broker business.

Thank you for this detailed explanation, now I know better what to observe when I operate news.

But if the spread sets the market, how do you prove that the broker manipulates it?

And what broker do you recommend then to avoid all this?

I'll take the screen recording part, I've never thought about it.

I don't think all brokers do, some just reflect the market as it is.
