Thread: Why is MT4 still king in 2025?

I open this thread because, honestly, I don't understand how it is possible that in 2025 we will continue to use a platform of almost two decades ago. MT4 looks like the Nokia 3310 trading: basic, limited... but indestructible. Why are so many still clinging to this when there are platforms with more functionality and more advanced graphics?

Because it works. As simple as that. I have tried cTrader, NinjaTrader, even TradingView with direct connection, and I always go back to MT4. It has thousands of indicators, experts, forums... and above all, it is light and does not hang up.

I would say we're still with MT4 out of pure fear of change. Many traders learned there and now they don't want to relearn from scratch on another platform. And yes, I am one of them.

It is not just custom. MT5, for example, does not allow hedging with all brokers. For those of us working with multispace strategies or partial coverage, MT4 remains more useful. Sometimes the old is not worse, it is simply more flexible.

I am glad that in this forum many complain about MT4, but they have no idea of programming an EA either in MQL4 or in MQL5. The problem is not the platform, it is the traders who use it.

MT4 is like that old car that never fails. It may not have touch screen or Bluetooth, but it takes you where you want without complications. I remain faithful until my broker no longer supports it.

Did you know that many brokers in Latin America still dont offer MT5? Infrastructure still revolves around MT4 and that wont change so soon. Even risk management plugins are designed for MT4.

It is not to defend the indefensible, but the consumption of MT4 resources on a VPS is ridiculous compared to other platforms. You can run 3 or 4 simultaneous accounts without lag. Can you do that with NinjaTrader? Spoiler: no.

Someone should make an updated version of MT4, keep everything good but with renewed interface, decent dark mode, and by God, fix the visual mode of strategy tester.

I already migrated everything to TradingView + broker execution with API. MT4 already looks like a relic. If you still operate there, don't complain if you stay in the stone age with spreads and slips.
